Pontiac Pavement Pounders Shootout: Ladies' Day
Owner Bio: Mary Beth Hess You could say that Mary Beth Hess found the Pontiac hobby as soon as she found her husband Roy. She had just moved in next door to him and was admiring his black '66 GTO. He walked up to her and asked, "Do you want to race it?" And the rest, as they say, is history. She is obviously a quick study, as her win record quickly built up over the last 12 years, winning a variety of races-- including the 1994 All Pontiac race at Indy, 1996 Night of Fire at Kil-Kare, as well as the 1997 GTO Nationals in Atlanta, where Mary Beth beat a racer in the finals with a delay box. Best of all, she and Roy were actually on their honeymoon! She also won the Bracket 2 class at the 1999 GTO Nationals in Kil-Kare In addition to racing, Mary Beth is an Occupational Therapist and trains and shows Australian Shepherds. She is also the President of the Greater Ohio Australian Shepherd Club. | Strip Specs | | Year/Model: | '66 GTO-original 4-barrel, 4-speed car | | Race Weight: | 3,115 lbs | | Engine: | '71 YC-code 455 | | Cubic Inches Before/After: | 455/462 | | Compression Ratio: | 12.5:1 | | Built By: | Performance Clinic, Beaver Creek, OH | | Fuel: | 100-octane Turbo Blue | | Carburetor: | 1050 Holley Dominator, #91/93 jets | | Spacer Plate: | 2" | | Intake Manifold: | Edelbrock Victor | | Fuel system: | Holley Blue Pump 120 gph, 1/2" fuel lines, no return line, 9 psi | | Heads: | Edelbrock, ported, 2.11/1.77 Manley stainless steel valves | | Flow Numbers: | 320-cfm intake, 267-cfm exhaust at .600" lift, 28" of water | | Pistons: | Ross forged flat-top 4.18" bore (455 + .030") | | Rings: | Speed-Pro | | Rods: | BME aluminum, stock length | | Crankshaft: | Stock 455 nodular-iron | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Yes | | Camshaft: | Comp Cams flat-tappet solid-lifter 274º/283º duration at .050, .648/.656 lift with Harland Sharp 1.65:1 aluminum roller rockers,108º LSA and centerline | | Camshaft Installed Position: | Straight up | | Distributor: | GM points-type | | Total Timing: | 36-38 at 2,400 rpm (varies by track tuning) | | Exhaust: | Hedman Husler Hedders, 2", primaries 3.5" collectors, 12" collector extensions | | Power Adder: | None | | Transmission: | Turbo 400, built by Auto Tech, reverse manual valve body | | Converter: | TCI 8", 4,500 rpm stall | | Shifter: | Hurst | | Rear Type/Ratio: | GM 12-bolt, 3.73 gears, 31-spline axles, Strange spool | | Brakes F/R: | Factory GM drums | | Wheels/Tires, Fr: | Fenton 15x5/Moroso 29x7.6x15 tires | | Wheels/Tires, Rear: | Centerline 15x10/Hoosier 29x12x15" slicks | | Tire Pressure: | 40 psi/10 psi | | Suspension Front: | Stock-type Monroe replacement shocks, no front sway bar | | Suspension Rear: | Stock-type Monroe replacement shocks, Jeg's adjustable upper and lower control arms | | Chassis Modifications: | Jeg's 6-point rollcage | | Interior Modifications: | Jeg's poly. race seat | | Exterior Modifications: | Fiberglass hood with scoop, fiberglass deck lid, front and rear bumpers | | Safety Modifications: | Jeg's 6-point rollcage, driveshaft safety loop, RCI 5-point safety harness, SFI-approved drivetrain parts | | Launch Technique: | Foot brake to 3,500 rpm | | Best e.t./mph Prior to Event (1/4-Mile): | 10.38 at 127.84 | | Best e.t./mph Prior to Event (1/8-Mile): | 6.57 at 103.81 | | Strip Tuning Log | | Run | Tuning | Launch RPM | Shift Point | 60-FT | 1/8-Mile | 1/4-Mile | | 1. | See Specs | 3,500 | 6,400 | 1.47 | 6.61/n/a | 10.45/126.3 | | 2. | Same | 3,500 | 6,400 | 1.49 | 6.59/n/a | 10.39/127.92 | | 3. | Same | 3,500 | 6,400 | 1.54 | 6.64/n/a | 10.43/128.32 | | 4. | Same | 3,500 | 6,400 | 1.54 | 6.75/n/a | 10.57/127.92 | | Notes | | Run 1: Good 60-ft; Run 3: Pull to right; Run 4: Scary pull to right | Owner Bio: Babe Dyer You might remember Babe's name from our front-drive shootout last year. This time she's actually behind the wheel while hubby Brent got to watch. Babe is running her own car this year, a 12-second street/strip '99 GTP that serves as "mom's taxi," hauling her three kids, Brody, Skyler, and Breann around. She credits her husband Brent for making the car so fast and PFYC.com for their sponsorship. Babe and Brent are co-founders of the Michigan Grand Prix Club, currently the largest state chapter of Club GP. In addition to her activities with the MGPC, Babe works at the GM Lansing Grand River assembly plant and has been a jazz, tap, and lyrical dancer since the age of three. As to the modified status of her own GP, Babe adds that, "I wanted to be a little faster than the normal Grand Prix. We also own a highly modded GP, so we just wanted this one to have a few mods." | Strip Specs | | Year/Model: | '99 GTP | | Race Weight: | 3,540 lbs | | Engine: | '99 L67 3800 Supercharged V-6 | | Cubic Inches Before/After: | 231/231 | | Compression Ratio: | 8.5:1 | | Built By: | GM | | Fuel: | Sunoco 104-octane unleaded | | Air Box: | Thrasher, 9" cone | | MAF/Throttle Body: | ZZP Stage 2 72mm | | Injectors: | 36 lb-hr | | Intake Manifold: | Factory GM | | Fuel System: | Stock GM | | Heads: | '99 L67, unported, stock 1.80/1.52 valves | | Piston: | Stock GM hypereutectic | | Rings: | GM factory | | Rods: | Stock powdered-metal | | Crankshaft: | Stock nodular-iron | | Rotating Assembly Balanced: | Stock | | Camshaft: | Comp Cams hydraulic roller, 206º/218º at .050, .520/.536 lift with stock 1.6:1 roller rockers, 115º LSA | | Distributor: | Stock GM crank trigger | | Total Timing: | DHP "Happy Knob" for in-car timing control | | Exhaust: | The Other Guys headers, 1 5/8" primaries, 2.25" crossover, 3" collectors, SLP exhaust with 2 1/2" pipes | | Power Adder: | Factory GM model 90 supercharger, Pulley Boys 3" pulley, 14-psi boost | | Transaxle: | Stock 4T65-E HD, 2.93:1 final drive ratio | | Shifter: | Stock | | Brakes F/R: | Production 10.9" | | Wheels/Tires Fr: | Stock Pontiac 16" 5-spoke aluminum/Hoosier QTP 26x9.5x16 slicks | | Wheels/Tires Rr: | Stock Pontiac 5-spoke aluminum/225/60-16 Goodyear all-season radials | | Tire Pressure: | 13 psi front | | Suspension F/R: | Stock, Pace Car springs, KYB struts | | Chassis Modifications: | None | | Interior Modifications: | None | | Exterior Modifications: | None | | Safety Modifications: | None | | Custom Computer Programming: | By Digital Horsepower | | Launch Technique: | Foot brake to 2,000 rpm | | Best e.t./mph Prior to Event (1/4-Mile): | 13.20 at 104 | | Strip Tuning Log | | Run | Tuning | Launch RPM | Shift Point | 60-FT | 1/8-Mile | 1/4-Mile | | 1. | DHP Adv 1º | 2,000 | 6,400 | 2.02 | 8.66/83.23 | 13.33/106.95 | | 3. | Same | 2,000 | 6,400 | 1.98 | 8.50/84.65 | 13.11/108.24 | | 5. | DHP 0º | 2,000 | 6,400 | 2.43 | 8.79/86.08 | 13.34/108.19 | | 6. | DHP Adv 1º | 2,000 | 6,400 | 1.85 | 8.26/84.53 | 12.88/107.70 | | 8. | Same | 2,000 | 6,400 | 1.86 | 8.24/85.03 | 12.83/107.28 | | Five most important passes are listed here in the order that they occurred | | Notes | | Run 1: Needed more throttle; Run 3: Knock too high & hot lap; Run 5: 60-ft bad; | | Run 6: Good 60-ft, low knock; Run 8: Same with better launch |
