Third Annual All GTO Track Day - Soldiering Goats

The Third Annual All GTO Track Day Brings Friends Together and Raises Money to Assist American Troops

Motorsports has grown into one of the largest industries in the world. Because of this popularity, it's not too uncommon to find large events being held for charity. However, it is uncommon to see a small, private event being held with charitable donations in mind.

The Third Annual All GTO Track Day was held January 20, 2008, at Bradenton Motorsports Park, in Bradenton, Florida. The event raised a hefty $867.20 for the Veterans of Foreign Wars "Project Uplink." This money will be used to supply our overseas troops with phone cards, allowing them to call home and talk to their families (a real morale booster).

Last year, the annual GTO event held a silent memorial for a fallen soldier and friend, Sgt. Chris Erberich. This year, the event committee found that the phone cards were an excellent way to assist the men and women serving. Thanks to the contributions of the event sponsors, 68 racers, and a slew of spectators, the track day far exceeded their original $500 minimum goal.

The 68 enthusiasts kept the race fans on their feet all day. Competition was divided into classes based on engine and level of modifications, making for some great races. This kept 11-second Goats from racing 13-second daily drivers. It almost seemed that each race came down to the big end, where the victor pulled a nose at the last second.

While the event is mostly focused on late-models, there were a handful of classic Great Ones on hand. A few raced, while others chose to hang out and enjoy the friendly company of their fellow Pontiac junkies.

Each class winner received a trophy to document their accomplishments, as well as a 10-percent discount on a camshaft or cam kit from Flowtech Induction, with free shipping.

The event has continued to grow over the past three years, and an even larger turnout is expected next year, especially since the Classic GTOs will more than likely race index or bracket to increase their turnout for future events.

The collection of both late-model and classic Goats racing for a great cause is sure to put a smile on your face. Be on the lookout for more information on next year's event.
